5 New Restaurants to Discover in 2023

The new year means new restaurants for you to try in New Haven! We already know that the Elm City has an eclectic variety of food for all palates, and now several new restaurants have joined the line-up of awesome food.

Over the past couple of months, several new restaurants have opened their doors in New Haven. From breakfast spots to Colombian cuisine, there is plenty of food to get your mouth watering. Are you getting hungry? It’s time to check in on five restaurants that are making their mark in the Elm City.

Poppy’s Coffee and Kitchen

Located in New Haven’s popular East Rock section, Poppy’s Coffee and Kitchen is serving up breakfast delights to start off your day. Choose from a simple plate of eggs to blueberry pancakes or a coconut quinoa porridge. There are also omelets and avocado toast to choose from. While lunch is not on the menu yet, it’s coming soon.

As of this writing, you can enjoy breakfast foods at Poppy’s Coffee and Kitchen Tuesday through Sunday from 7 am-3 pm.

Fest Faves

This is a brilliant one. Who doesn’t love carnival food? Thanks to Fest Faves you don’t have to wait until the summer to have your favorite carnival goodies. Fest Faves has many of the items you thought you could only get at the carnival. Carnival eats and festival treats include Fried Dough Pizza, Maple Bacon Doughnut Cheeseburger (yep, that’s a thing!), jumbo corn dogs, and chocolate-covered bacon. Don’t forget the deep fried double stuffed Oreos!

Fest Faves on Whitney Ave is open Monday-Saturday to satisfy all of your festival food cravings!

Mi Gusto

New Haven is also now home to a new Latin Caribbean restaurant, Mi Gusto. There is an extensive menu of many favorites like empanadas, mofongos, and a variety of special types of rice. The owners are Dominican Republic natives, but the food also reflects some cultural favorites of Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad. A little different than the classic New Haven Pizza 😉.

Mi Gusto is located on Orange Ave. in New Haven and is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

Chacra

As New Haven’s only Peruvian restaurant and nightclub, Chacra is making its mark on the Elm City. Located on bustling Temple Street, Chacra’s menu celebrates the culinary diversity of Peru with some exciting dishes. The menu features Peruvian Street Corn and chicken soup as well as seafood dishes and Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken. Chacra also features pisco, the national liquor of Peru. It’s a grape-based aguardiente. In Peru, pisco is known as a “destination of origin” drink so it can only be made with grapes from particular regions of Peru.

Chacra is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

The Place 2 Be

If you’re a brunch fan, we know the place you’ll want to be. The Place 2 Be is an Instagram-friendly brunch restaurant that recently opened its fifth location on Elm Street in New Haven. The two-floor restaurant features two bars and a real indoor tree that’s under a skylight that stretches up two stories. There’s also a 1,500-square-foot rooftop patio. 

You can enjoy brunch all day long with menu favorites including Nutella coconut pancakes, Cookies-n-Cream Oreo Pancakes, and breakfast nachos. There’s also a huge variety of french toast like Cinnamon Toast French Toast and Fruity Pebble French Toast. If you’re more of a lunch fan of the whole brunch experience there are salads, burgers, and sandwiches galore! Don’t forget the breakfast mimosas and other drinks.

The Place 2 Be is open seven days a week from 7 am-8 pm.

With all of those restaurants opening their doors over the past few months, there are plenty of places to put on your “must-eat” list for 2023. I personally recommend bringing a big appetite and an open mind – you never know what delicious dish might catch your fancy. Let’s go eat!
