Convenient Areas to Live Near New Haven

Within New Haven, there are several areas that are convenient for Yale students to live in. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular ones.

Downtown

The Downtown area is a popular spot because it’s where Yale’s Central Campus is located. It’s your best shot at finding some of the best restaurants in the city as well as entertainment. There is plenty of nightlife, shopping, theater access, and more.

At the heart of downtown is the New Haven Green which is home to many concerts and festivals during the Spring and Summer. The best part is that many of these amenities are within walking distance. If you don’t want to walk, biking is always an option as there are ample bike racks around the city where you can lock up your bike as you stroll the area.

Dixwell/Newhallville

Another popular New Haven neighborhood is the Dixwell/Newhallville area. The Farmington Canal Greenway links this area with Yale’s Central Campus. This is a great opportunity to walk, bike, or run on this scenic trail.

In this area, you’ll also find the Rose Center which houses the Yale Police Facility as well as the Dixwell-Yale University Community Learning Center. Science Park, the home of the well-known Winchester factory, is also here and is being transformed into an area for bio-technology and start-up companies to flourish.

East Rock

The East Rock neighborhood is located just east of the Yale campus and is where you will find scenic East Rock Park. Drive to the peak that is 359 feet high, or do some hiking in the park to get some amazing views of the city and choose a picnic spot. Edgerton Park is also in this neighborhood. This is another great spot for a relaxing stroll or to go sledding in the winter.

The Hill

New Haven’s Hill area is a popular spot for many medical students as it is home to Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale University Medical School. Here you’ll find plenty of housing as well as the attractive waterfront area known as City Point.

Westville

The Westville area is another spot that many Yale students call home. It is located about two miles west of Downtown and the main Yale campus. Populated with shopping, dining, and other services, Westville has plenty to offer to people who call the area home. Here you’ll also find a growing artistic community with studios and a co-op gallery as well as an annual open studios tour.

The Yale Bowl, the Yale Golf Course, and Edgewood Park, all border this neighborhood, providing plenty of recreational activities for those in the area.

Wooster Square

Did somebody say pizza? Trust us, there’s more to this area than nationally renowned pizza spots like Sally’s and Pepe’s, but that’s one big draw! The Wooster Square area sits directly east of Downtown, across from State Street, and just a short walk from the Yale Campus. Wooster Square Park is right in the center of it all and is home to festivals and farmer’s markets.
