One of the most popular times to be in New Haven is the Fall. With plenty of visitors travelling for the changing leaves, perfectly comfortable temperatures, and great New England traditions, there is a lot for us residents to be thankful for!

Do you want to make the most out of this season? Luckily, you don’t have to travel far to experience the best of fall, from seasonal pizzas to outdoor adventures to community activities.

Leaf Peeping

Leaf Peeping is the New England tradition of going outside with the primary purpose of seeing the extraordinarily colorful foliage. Whether you’re a keen hiker or just fancy a gentle stroll with a pumpkin spiced latte in hand, there are so many walks around New Haven that’ll have you officially peeped out!

For a truly spectacular view of the city and its tree lined streets, we suggest a hike up East Rock. Head up Whitney Ave on foot or on the 228 bus from New Haven Green to the Eli Whitney Center and trek up to the top of East Rock. The tree covered route makes for a special fall experience and the breath-taking views at the top are even better.

Another great space for leaf peeping in New Haven is Egerton Park (also on Whitney Ave, near the Eli Whitney Center). This grand stone-walled park is a family and student favorite for a relaxing afternoon.

Grove Street Cemetery is also known for the impressive fall foliage displays. Perfect for a spooky dusk walk towards the end of October.

Planetarium Show

If you’re looking for a fun evening this fall, head to The Leitner Family Observatory and Planetarium one Tuesday for a free public viewing. Just a short walk on Prospect Street from the green, the shows are on 7pm and 8pm in October and 6pm and 7pm in November.

Halloween Events

It wouldn’t be fall without some Spooktacular events in New Haven.  The weekend of the 30th and 31st October this year is set to be filled with events for all ages.

Edgewood Park will have a drive-thru version of their annual spooky Haunted Road. This free event starts at the corner of Edgewood Ave and Hobart St and ends with candy for the kids.

For adults, check out the official Halloween Bar Crawl on Saturday night (ticket required). It’s a great way to see some of New Haven’s best bars and meet a few spooky faces along the way. Halloween costumes are strongly encouraged and the competition for those dress-up contests can be pretty serious!

One of the highlights of Halloween in New Haven is the Elm Shakespeare Company’s event in Edgerton Park. An eerie walk through the park will take you on an journey through the spookiest scenes of Shakespeare performed by the professional company. Wrap up warm and enjoy an incredible 75-minute performance that’ll be sure to spook and thrill. Oh, and did we mention, it’s free?! Just sign up for a ticket on Eventbrite for their Taste of Fear II event.

Thanksgiving Pizza

As the home of pizza in the US, would you expect anything less from New Haven? Available from Bar on Crown Street, this pizza concoction is a seasonal favorite amongst locals and visitors! Imagine roasted turkey, mash potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing and gravy all on a white pie with mozzarella… We highly recommend you check it out and you will not be disappointed!  Bar’s thanksgiving pizza is available throughout November.

Alongside these special fall activities, New Haven is also thriving with its amazing restaurant scene, world-class museums, and independent shops, providing year-round entertainment. Thanks to the mild climate and sunny days, Fall is the perfect time to get out and explore all of what New Haven has to offer. Just don’t forget your jacket!
