5 Graduate Housing Options for Yale Students

If you’re a Yale Graduate student and you’re looking around for housing options, it’s all about location. You want to find a place that’s not too far from campus so you’re not trekking across town, especially when the traffic is crazy. If you can find a place within walking or biking distance, that’s a major bonus! Most grad students live on or near campus, with some having a larger commute on their hands because they choose to call neighboring cities home.

While location is a top priority, so is safety. You want to do your homework about the neighborhood around you so that you feel safe. As you start your search, ask about the people living around there. Are there other grad or undergrad students around? You don’t want your housing choice to make you socially isolated either. It’s always a bonus if  other students are bouncing around. It creates a better vibe, plus there’s a good chance you’ll meet new people.

So here’s your little checklist as you search for graduate housing:

  • Location
  • Safety
  • Cool Neighbors

Keeping all of those things in mind, check out this list of graduate housing options we’ve compiled for you.

On-Campus Housing

For some Yale grad students, on-campus housing is the easiest choice. But, it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach if you choose to go this route. Yale offers different housing options. There are dorms, suites, and apartments with a different number of bedrooms. If you have a friend you’re looking to room with, you may want to look into a suite or apartment.

Here are some things to keep in mind if you’re considering on-campus housing. Dorms are typically furnished while apartments are not. When you choose to live in a dorm, you’re likely going to have to share a bathroom and you won’t have access to a kitchen. That means you’ll be depending on dining halls or local restaurants when you want to eat.

On-campus apartment living is going to give you more options because you’ll have your own bathroom and kitchen (these are major, trust us). Plus, you’ll have a living room where you can chill when you don’t want to be in your room.

The location of any on-campus housing choice is obviously going to be convenient. Be sure to ask about building security and the general safety around the building. Always be aware of your surroundings! You should definitely have some cool neighbors because you’ll be surrounded by other Yale grad students.

East Rock Neighborhood

The East Rock Neighborhood is a popular spot for Yale grads and undergrads to call home. According to niche.com, it is the fourth-best neighborhood in New Haven to live in. This includes the Upper State Street area as well as the area south of Humphrey Street. It’s conveniently located near the campus, so depending on exactly where you live, you can walk or bike there. There are also Yale Shuttle stops around the neighborhood when you just want a ride. Many people who live there rent out their homes, so you’ll see that type of apartment living here. You’ll notice a lot of Victorian-style homes in this neighborhood. So, if you’re into that, this could be a spot for you.

Here’s a fun fact about this neighborhood. East Rock got its name from the park that sits at one end. It’s an awesome hiking spot if you’re into the great outdoors.

Prospect Hill

The Prospect Hill area is East Rock’s neighbor. This is also a popular area where Yale graduate students call home because of its convenient location. If you’re a graduate student who is also raising a family you may like to know that Prospect Hill is considered the best New Haven neighborhood to raise a family. For this reason, you’ll find many families in this part of the city. It’s also popular with professionals.

Like East Rock, you’ll find housing to be in the form of rented homes. This can run the gamut when it comes to size and price. If you don’t have a car, the Yale Shuttle does stop in this neighborhood, making it easier to get around.

Wooster Square

While it may not be within walking distance, Wooster Square is another option for Yale graduate housing. It does have a neighborhood feel that appeals to many who walk through. Wooster Street is considered “New Haven’s Little Italy”.  As you’re strolling by you can’t help but notice the smells coming from several great Italian restaurants and pizzerias. Sally’s and Pepe’s are famous for their pizza in this neck of the woods. So, if you choose to call this area home, you certainly won’t starve.

When it comes to housing, rented homes are the more-dominant option here. One key thing to remember is that if you choose to live in this great neighborhood, you’re likely not going to be able to hoof it to campus. Plan on driving, biking, or taking public transportation.
